If you are reading this, chances are you are a biker who loves to tour or you want to become one. If you are either, you need to know that in the adventure tourer category of motorcycles, the Suzuki DR650 is as popular as Brad Pitt is when it comes to movies. Since the DR650 first came out in 1990 it has proven itself to be the ultimate affordable touring machine your money could buy; the robust Japanese engineering, its reliability and most importantly its price tag which compared to its competitors.

You don’t normally buy a touring motorcycle for its looks but for its ruggedness, comfort and overall longevity. The 2016 Suzuki DR 650S is not exactly a beauty but is a purpose-built touring motorcycle that can get you through all kinds of terrain imaginable.
For touring on and off the road, the motorcycle is complemented by a 90/90 R21 54S tyre on the front and 120/90 R17 64S tyre on the rear. The tyres could have been beefier but they serve their purpose well and the special compound on them will make sure you don’t skid or lose control when you are speeding through sand or gravel. The DR650S comes with a one-piece seat with a seat height of 885mm.

The instrumentation is minimal, which is a good move to focus purely on the riding experience. Fuel capacity is 3.4 gallons or 13 liters, which with the average MPG of above 70 miles will take you across state lines and back. The bike is 2255mm long, 865mm wide and has a wheelbase of 1490mm.

The motorcycle comes with a 644cc 4-Valve SOHC engine that can produce 43hp of power at 6,400rpm and a massive torque of 54Nm at 4,600rpm. The transmission is handled by a wide-ratio 5 speed gearbox that has proven itself over the years. Now some of you might feel the power to be inadequate but don’t be too quick to judge; its a different story when you’re talking about touring motorcycles, and this model has been known for putting to shame its counterparts with bigger horses too.

The bike provides ample stopping power for those crucial moments through its 290mm hydraulic front brakes and 240mm hydraulic brakes on the rear. Suspension on the front is taken care by the 260mm Telescopic Fork and on the rear by the Aluminum Twin Sided Swing Arm with an Adjustable Rebound Damping and Shock. The bike has an impressive ground clearance of 265mm which is just enough to plough it through mud, sand and even small streams.
